Harry James Potter was born on July 31, 1980. He shares the same birthday as JK Rowling.

He nearly died at the age of fifteen months, on October 31, 1981, when Lord Voldemort, a powerful dark wizard, cast the unforgivable curse Avada Kedavra on him. Before Harry, no one had ever survived such a curse. He only kept a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead from this attack. It was the power of his mother Lily's love, who sacrificed herself for him, that caused this "miracle". However, the details of this unexpected event are not revealed to the reader until the seventh novel. Only one thing is certain: Lily's love is something that Voldemort was unable to foresee, much less understand. This "miraculous" protection comes from a very ancient magic linked to love and can remain active until Harry comes of age, on the condition that someone of his blood (in other words, his aunt Petunia) takes him into their home. The Dark Lord's spell backfired and he was reduced to a bodiless being, weaker than a ghost but still able to use his power of possession. Harry was briefly left alone in his crib, wounded in the forehead, in the middle of his almost completely destroyed house, the ruins covering the bodies of his father and mother. Very quickly, however, Rubeus Hagrid came to save him and left to join Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall on the flying motorbike of Sirius Black, Harry's godfather, so that he would not be found by the Death Eaters.

Harry was placed at 4 Privet Drive with his uncle and aunt, the Dursleys— Muggles , who were thus responding, albeit reluctantly, to Albus Dumbledore's request. He would live with them until he entered Hogwarts, then return there only every summer, until his final departure, the summer of his 17th birthday. Dumbledore, who was aware of the protective magic linked to blood, wrote a letter to his aunt Petunia Dursley, née Evans, sister of Lily Evans Potter, explaining what had happened at the Potters. However, Petunia, disgusted by magic, her "horrible monster of a sister" and her "horrible husband", hid from her nephew the truth about his parents' deaths and his nature as a wizard. The Dursleys made his life difficult, making him do many menial tasks, while their son Dudley, a big, plump boy spoiled by his parents, made Harry his punching bag, having fun chasing him with his friends (a game they called Harry Chase) and hitting him, the rare times he managed to catch him. Harry also suffered a lot of mistreatment from his uncle and aunt: until the end of his tenth year, he slept in a cupboard under the stairs, had to cook for them (but very rarely ate enough) and could only wear Dudley's old clothes. But above all, he grew up from the age of fifteen months to the age of eleven without parental love. The Dursleys had to move during the events of the seventh novel so that Voldemort could not follow their trail.

(*) A figure Bobblehead , sometimes translated as "bobblehead figure", is a type of collectible toy, often with a head that is oversized relative to its body. Instead of a solid connection to the rest of the body, it is connected to it by a spring or hook so that the head bobs when touched, hence the name.
