Severus Snape was Professor of Potions from 1981 to 1996, Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts from 1996 to 1997, Head of Slytherin House from 1981 to 1997, and also Headmaster of Hogwarts School from 1997 to 1998. Snape played a decisive role in the war against Voldemort, although this remained secret for many years. Indeed, the nature of his exact loyalty (to Voldemort or to Dumbledore) is a crucial question in the saga, resolved only in the seventh book.
