Superman is an American comic book superhero and sometimes supervillain from the fantasy world of the DC Universe. This character is considered an American cultural icon.

Created in January 1933 by American screenwriter Jerry Siegel and Canadian cartoonist Joe Shuster while they were both living in Cleveland, the character was sold to Detective Comics. He appeared for the first time in an Action Comics in June 1938. The character was then taken up in several radio plays, television shows, films, comic strips and video games. Given the success and notoriety of his adventures, Superman is essential in the creation of a genre specific to superheroes.
